Michelle Phan’s Make Up Masquerade

It’s one of those Friday nights: Right after putting my son to bed at 9pm, I am full on in my PJ’s and sinking into the couch with my HBO. But then I see my friend Brian is in town, so I text back: “And what are you up to this weekend?” He is apparently shooting an episode of “Masquerade” for Michelle Phan, the YouTube make-up instructor sensation. The shoot is nearby, so I get off my couch and head to the Penthouse at the James Hotel.
I walked into a room full of strangers who seemed to be properly masked and liquored up. A cameraman was shooting the crowd and a small girl in a glittery dress who resembled Betty Boop seemed to be directing—it turns out she is Michelle Phan. She got her start by recording herself at home in Florida, and now she travels around the world shooting videos as a spokesperson for Lancome.
She is lovely and super down to earth. She is amazing with the camera as well as make-up. You have to check out her videos—she made me want to start wearing makeup and I can see why teens have gone crazy over her. My friend Brian, who is an actor/producer (you can find him on Hawaii 5.0) played her love interest. It’s A typical story of guy glimpses beautiful and mysterious girl at the masquerade but can’t seem find her. They do the scenes multiple times and then it’s a wrap. Based on the writing on the window that says “Meet me in Time Square,” the next shooting location is Time Square.
I kind of love people like Michelle: a self starter who has figured out how to live her dream in an innovative way. I found her inspiring. How gutsy to put yourself out there in front of millions of people without an ounce of makeup? Now I gotta go try some of the techniques I learned from this small-framed guru. Here are some of her videos:
